Bloom Elementary raises over $40,000 for diabetes research
May 28th, 2009 by Valerie ChavezLOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE-TV) - Students at Bloom Elementary had a lot to
be proud of on Thursday. For the fifth consecutive year, they
raised money for diabetes research to benefit Norton Kosair Hospital.
To
celebrate their greatest year yet, the 'Greatest' himself, Muhammad
Ali, stopped by along with several past Olympians, including bobsledder
Doug Sharp who won the bronze medal in the 2002 Winter Games. Also on
hand was Bill Evans who won the gold medal in basketball in the 1956
Olympics and Caroline Burke who took home the bronze medal in swimming
at the 2008 games. They all came to congratulate the students on
raising over $40,000 this year.
The program was started by
Susan Moore, a second grade teacher. Moore suffers from diabetes and
has organized the annual fundraiser for the past five years. During
that time, the school has raised a total of well over $120,000 for the
Kids for Kids program and diabetes research with the Children's
Hospital Foundation.
